Wadihan: Echoes derives its name from the Amis word “Wadihan,” meaning “echo from the valley.” More than a sound image, it is a way of sensing resonance with the land. It invites us to slow down and listen to the voices rising from deep within the valley—a dialogue between mountain and sea, a convergence of earth and memory.
This work is inspired by the polyphonic choral traditions of the Amis people. In this singing practice, each vocal line maintains its independence and individuality, while resonating with others in collective harmony. It is not only a musical form, but a cultural expression of counterpoint—where individuals exist within the group, and diversity finds cohesion.
In terms of materials, the work features bamboo and rebar. Bamboo represents natural rhythm—flexible and resilient, like melodies flowing through the forest. Rebar stands for structure and tension, like the underlying framework that supports the body of sound. These materials intertwine in space like melodic lines in polyphony, creating a visual and tactile counterpoint.
Through this spatial counterpoint, Wadihan: Echoes seeks to form a field of resonance—between culture, sound, and material. It is both installation and silent polyphonic score, responding to the call of the land, the whisper of memory, and the ceaseless echoes between valley and sea.

My heartfelt gratitude goes to Siki Sufin and JungShian Wen, whose invaluable support, skill, and dedication made it possible to bring Wadihan: Echoes to life. Their hands, patience, and insight were essential throughout the process—from the first sketches and structural experiments to the final installation.
This work could not have been realized without their collaboration and generosity. Together, they became part of the echo itself—resonating through every beam, knot, and breath of Wadihan: Echoes.
